September Is the New “New Year”
Recently, I was speaking with many friends, associates and parents. To summarize, the consensus is everyone is pretty much getting ready to launch the new season and school year with new goals and new routines. To begin with, we are refreshed from a fantastic summer. At least it has been in the Ottawa area.
New Season
Don’t get me wrong… I am not trying to rush summer away. In fact, I can hang on to the gorgeous weather for as long as it will stay around. Overall, my excitement comes with all the newness that September offers. In fact, I call it the new “New Year”.
Whether you have children or not doesn’t change the fact that September offers us all the chance to focus on our goals for the remainder of the year. Firstly, we are just coming off a summer of relaxing holidays or some time off from the regular grind. As such, that gives us some perspective on what we want to accomplish going into the fall and, dare I say, winter months. But let’s not get too far ahead, here. For now, we will stick to the fall.
Starting a new season of setting personal and/or professional goals is like the New Year’s resolution we all found ourselves doing at one point. Likewise, September is about new beginnings. Moreover, it gives us all the chance to reset, refocus, and go forth with motivation and renewed ambition.
Tips for Your New Year Goals
The good thing about this time of year, is we don’t have the winter weather to hold us back from getting out. As such, we can get on track with some goals we want to set for ourselves. Also, the fall allows us the time and ability to ease into a routine. So we can create the momentum we all need to make the new changes part of our everyday norm.
In conclusion, here are some tips on how to reach your goals with success:
- Keep a journal of things you want to change or add/remove from your everyday life. For example, adding exercise to your day, eating cleaner, better sleep habits, spending more quality time with friends and family, or setting new goals in your profession and career.
- Prioritize your list. First, take the time to put some thought into what you feel are the most important goals you want to achieve. Also, if it has anything to do with your health, I recommend it take priority.
- Write down what resources are available to you to help you achieve your goal. By the way, if you need to get assistance from a professional, then do some research and see what options are the best for you.
- Take it one goal at a time. Most importantly, don’t overwhelm yourself with doing everything all at once. In fact, that is the quickest way to failure. Instead, focus on mastering one specific goal at a time. Hence, once you have the momentum and the routine established with one goal, then move on to the next. Ultimately, this promotes success, and builds the confidence you need to push towards other goals on your list.
- Find a mentor, coach, or accountability partner to help keep you on track. Because when we acknowledge what we want to achieve, and bring other support systems into the process, we are more likely to stay on track with goals. Therefore, try to make sure you have positive support to ensure you stay motivated and excited for success.
- Remember to enjoy the journey. Also, keeping a record of what you have accomplished will help to encourage you if you hit a road block along the way. Strive for excellence and not perfection.
- Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone has their own path to follow. Most importantly, taking your eyes off of what you are doing to compare yourself to someone (who may have already been working on their own personal goals for a while) can discourage you, and set you off course.
- Seek inspiration from someone who understands where you are coming from or who has walked the walk before you did. The right insight and advice can go a long way.
